OFCOM’s Royal Mail Changes: What They Mean for Your Direct Mail Campaigns

OFCOM has announced updates to Royal Mail’s Universal Service, effective from 28 July 2025. At Citipost Mail, we’re committed to ensuring your direct mail campaigns continue to run smoothly and deliver results, no matter how the postal landscape evolves.

 What’s Changing?

From 28 July, Royal Mail will update its delivery schedule:

  • 1. Second Class letters will no longer be delivered on Saturdays, but will instead arrive on alternate weekdays.
  • 2. First Class mail will continue to be delivered Monday to Saturday.

Key Updates:

  1. 1. D+3 (Standard) Service:
Second Class and equivalent services will now be delivered within 3 working days after handover, on alternate weekdays.
  2. 2. D+2 (Priority) Service:
A new equivalent DSA First Class service, offering delivery Monday to Saturday for urgent or time-sensitive mail.
  3. 3. No Saturday Delivery for D+3 and D+5:
Standard (D+3) and Economy (D+5) services will no longer include Saturday deliveries.

The Alternative Day Delivery Model

Royal Mail’s new delivery model means that Second Class, Standard, and Economy mail will be delivered on a rotating schedule throughout the week. Each household will have a set pattern—such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday one week, then Tuesday and Thursday the next, with schedules rotating accordingly. There will be no Saturday deliveries for these services. Royal Mail are expected to roll out the alternative delivery model over the next 12-18 months.

What Does This Mean for You?

For most customers, these changes simply mean a new delivery rhythm for certain mail types, with the only imminent change on the 28 July being the removal of Saturday deliveries. There’s no need to worry—your campaigns can continue as before, with just a slight adjustment to expected delivery days
